Introduction To Psalm


Psalm as defined by the dictionary is a form of poem, song or a ballad that are written in order to praise the Almighty. The Book of Psalms is a huge compilation of prayers, verses and songs. It highlights all the human emotions and provides an array of backgrounds during which these songs were written. The authors of most of the Psalms till date are unknown but yes the superscription present in the Bible indicates towards King Davis who was colloquially called the sweet psalmist of Israel.

The structure of the Book of Psalms bears close resemblance to the Pentateuch which is amongst the Five Books of Moses. The five books all together contain around 150 Psalms. Doxology or a few verses that praise the greatness of God mark the end of each book.

Psalms and everything within

The Psalms are further classified into various forms. The one's that come under the 'Royal' category glorify God and his tell us about his unending reign. The one's that are tagged as 'Zion' as the poems that concentrate on Jerusalem and its related facets. The 'Penitential' Psalms are the one in which man confesses his sins and misdeeds in front of Lord. The next are the 'Wisdom' Psalms that segregate the good and the evil. There are some poems and songs in which man has requested God to fulfill his wish by punishing the wicked. These comprise the 'Imprecatory' Psalms. 'Passover' sect contains the very happy, cheery and joyous songs that can be hummed while praying or praising God. 'Hallel' section includes the verses that spotlight the evacuation from Egypt. The last group is called the 'Lament' Psalms.

Psalm appreciation is not an easy task. The aim with which they were created was not for enjoyment or entertainment but was expected to be used during worshipping the Lord. These verses were accumulated over a large period of time, almost from the era of Moses till the time of Ezra. Thespian amplification is vividly observed and it speaks of almost all the aspects of the human life. The Bible Psalms study reveals that these poetic verses are the most intricate and thought-provoking pieces of art that were created then.

The Bible Book of Psalms: An overview

The Book of Psalms is undoubtedly the longest one in the Bible. It includes an array of topics like justice, goodwill, sin, war, worship, hate, love, anger, wisdom etc. This book also became famous as the "book of truth". King David seems to rule the roost as most of the Psalms are supposedly written by him. This hymnbook is extremely sacred and many Psalms are used as chants for daily praying. This Book of Bible encompasses all facades of humankind and hence caters to interesting reading.
